Jóhannes Helgason was born in Mýrasýsla in 1870. Died in New Iceland in 1944.

Johannes emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, a sister and a brother in 1887. He lived in the city the next three years and then headed for Klondyke in Yukon. His search for gold was not successful so he abandoned further plans of that nature, moved to Victoria on Vancouver Island where he lived for a year. Returned to Winnipeg and from there to the Framnes Settlement near Arborg where his brother Arni had settled. After some time he found his own place in the Icelandic River Settlement where he became a successful farmer.
