Jóhannes was only three years old when in 1887 he emigrated from Iceland with his parents, Sigurður Erlendsson and Medónía Indriðadóttir. They settled in Winnipeg where his father worked for the Winnipeg Water System for 20 years. Jóhanna, at the age of 19, emigrated west to Winnipeg in 1900. They bought land in the Víðir-Sandy Hills Settlement.
