Guðmundur was three years old when he came west in 1886 with his parents and their four children. They moved to New Iceland and settled near Gimli.
Guðmundur and Una lived in Gimli for the first few years before moving to the Geysir Settlement.
They moved to Árborg when the town expanded. When Þorsteinn Sveinsson sold his land in the Framnes Settlement, Guðmundur bought it and they lived there.
