Skafti came west in 1874 and stayed in Kinmount for the first year. He went with the Land Survey Committee in the summer of 1875 to survey an area in New Iceland. He stayed in Selkirk during the survey, until the fall when he took the first group of settlers to New Iceland in October 1875. He left New Iceland in early spring in 1882 and settled in the Argyle Settlement.
