Þorkell Ólafsson: Born in Vík in Flateyjardal in S. Þingeyjarsýsla in 1848. Died in 1931 in Alberta. He took the name Olson in the west.
Spouse: Helga Jóhannesdóttir born at Strönd in Mývatnssveit in S. Þingeyjarsýsla in 1856. She died in 1938 in Vancouver.
Children: 1) Ólína Hólmfríður b. 1879 2) Vilhjálmur b. 1886 3) Harriett b. 1891.
Þorkell and Helga came west in 1877 and first lived in Muskoka, Ontario. They lived in Parry Sound for several years. They then moved west to Winnipeg and then took land in the Argyle Settlement in 1884. Thorkel’s health deteriorated so they moved from Argyle 1904 and went west to Newton Station, British Columbia. They farmed there until 1914, sold the land, and moved in with their son near Innisfail, Alberta, where Thorkell died. Helga then moved to Vancouver and lived with their daughter, Olina.
