Sigfús came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888. During his early years in the west, he worked in many jobs in Manitoba, in Duluth, Minnesota, and in N. Dakota. He settled in the Icelandic River Settlement in New Iceland in 1898 and lived there after that.
