Guðmundur emigrated to Winnipeg with his mother, Helga Aradóttir in 1883. They went to the Icelandic River Settlement but Guðmundur went to Winnipeg after a short stay. Lived there for the rest of his life. He joined the Northwest Mounted Police and may have been the first non-British recruit. He participated in the war against Louis Riel in 1885 and was sometimes nicknamed “Soldier Björn” after that. He worked on the railway a few years and an Irish friend suggested a different name. This explains the name Byron Doyle.
