Óli Kristinn was the son of John Coghill from Scotland and Sigríður Ólafsdóttir. The Iceland census of 1901 shows him with his mother in Reykjavik and he is registered as Óli Kristinn Jónsson. He moved west in 1910 and studied accounting in Winnipeg during the first year. He got a job in Riverton and lived there the longest.
