Halldór emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents and siblings in 1883 and moved to Akra, N. Dakota.  He moved north to New Iceland in 1896 got a job in the Fljóts Settlement. There he met and married Anna Sigríður, who lived there with her parents, Hálfdán Sigmundsson and Solveig Árnadóttir.  Halldór and Anna moved south to Roseau, Minnesota in the spring of 1897, where Halldór’s parents lived. Their stay there was short because they returned to New Iceland a year later and settled in Riverton.
