Benedikt came west with his father, Jón Benediktsson and brothers in 1887. Benedikt went west to Saskatchewan and took land in the Þingvalla Settlement near Churchbridge in 1891. He was not there long before moving to N. Dakota where he met and married Kristín. She had emigrated with her parents in 1893. They moved north to the so-called Marshland west of the village of Langruth, Manitoba in 1901 and then north to the Narrows near Lake Manitoba. There, Benedikt worked on the ferry, but also hunted in the summer and winter. For a while, the family lived close to Reykjavik, MB somewhat north. Benedict decided he wanted to go west to the Pacific to study salmon fishing. He moved the family south to Winnipeg and he went west to the Queen Charlotte Islands and later to Graham Island both in British Columbia. It was not a fairy tale life, and Benedikt returned to Manitoba, came back to the Winnipeg family and they settled in the Narrows again. In 1914 they moved to the Isafold Settlement and lived there the rest of their time.
