Jónatan Jónatansson was born in N. Múlasýsla in 1844. He died in Minneapolis on March 21, 1909. He took the last name Peterson in the west.

They emigrated west in 1877 and first lived in Wisconsin. They soon moved from there to the Lyon County Settlement in Minnesota and lived there for a while, but then moved to Minneota where Jonathan worked in a store. From there, the family traveled to New Ark, S. Dakota, where Jonathan spent years as a store owner. Jonathan soon saw the benefits of giving his children the opportunity to get a good education. Karl completed a university degree and the twins, Jónína and Johanna, were the first Icelandic girls to complete a university degree in N. America.
