They emigrated to Ontario, Canada in 1874 and spent the first winter in Kinmount. They moved to New Iceland a year later and settled in the Árnes Settlement. Sigurður moved to the Víðirnes Settlement and named his farm Öldudal. Traveling with them was Sigurður’s sister, Ingunn b. 1842, who also died of smallpox.
