
Kristján Vilhelm Jónsson Photo FLNÍ
Kristján Vilhelm Jónsson* was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla in 1826. He died in the Narrows in Manitoba on January 23, 1908. He took the name Kernested or Kjernested in the west.
Spouse: 1) Þorbjörg Pálsdóttir b. 1817 2) Sigurlaug Sæmundsdóttir b. 1836 in Skagafjarðarsýsla 3) Sigríður Kristjánsdóttir.
Children: With Þorbjörg: 1. Páll b. 1849 2. Þórdís b. 1852. They had other children, but their fate is unknown. With Sigurlaug: 1. Þorbjörg b. 1865 2. Halldór b. November 16, 1869. Sigurlaug had Jónína Sigrún Jónsdóttur b. 1862 with an earlier husband. Kristján and Sigríður did not have children together.
Kristján emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with Sigurlaug and all their children in 1876. They went directly to New Iceland and took land in the Víðirnes Settlement, naming their land Kjarna. Kristján lived there until 1906 and then moved with his son Páls, to the Narrows.
*Kristján Kærnested is listed in Vesturfaraskrá. A Hallgrímur Jónsson and his wife, Halldóra Þorláksdóttir lived for awhile at Kjarna in Hrafnagilshreppur in the 18th century. One of their sons took the last name Kjærnested. (Skagfirðingabók 01.01.1994 bls. 101)
