Jón emigrated west in 1883 to Winnipeg, but Guðrún was studying cooking in Copenhagen. She emigrated west in 1889 and joined Jón in Hensel, N. Dakota where his parents, Guðmundur Gíslason and Sigríður Símonardóttir, lived. Jón and Guðrún bought land in the Geysir Settlement in 1902 and did not live at Hvamm, the farm of Jón’s parents.
