Tómas emigrated west with his mother Kristín Jónatansdóttir and siblings in 1876. Kristín was the widow of Tryggvi Ingimundarson. They first settled in Mikley and then moved to Mountain, N. Dakota. Tómas and María bought land in the Geysir Settlement in 1900 and named their land Svaðastaður. They lived there until 1933 and then moved to Steep Rock, Manitoba.
