They emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1890, but settled in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota where Hermann worked in a store in the village of Edinburg. They later they moved to Winnipeg where he worked for the weekly newspaper Lögberg. They spent their summers on their land in the Víðir Settlement.
