Bertel Högni was the son of Gunnlaugur Stefánsson, a lawyer, and his wife, Ragnhildur Benediktsdóttir Gröndal. He lived in England in 1868 and sailed west from London in 1880. Bertel first lived in Chicago and then moved to the Lincoln County Settlement in Minnesota where his nephew Snorri Högnason lived. He lived there until 1883 when he moved to Tacoma, Washington. He pursued academic work at the Methodist University.
