Stefán Þ Jónsson was born on June 21, 1873 in N. Múlasýsla. He died on March 15, 1947. He took the name Westdal, as had his father Jón, and signed his name Stefan Th. Westdal.

Stefán emigrated west with his parents in 1880 and lived in the Lyon County Settlement in Minnesota until the turn of the century. He learned bookbinding and the newspaper business, managing the Minneota Mascot from 1896 to 1900. After marriage, he moved east and earned a law degree in Washington D.C. They moved to Williston, North Dakota in 1908 where his wife’s parents lived. He owned several newspapers in North Dakota.
