Guðjón Þorsteinsson was born at Grímsstaðir á Fjöllum in N. Þingeyjarsýsla on April 1, 1852. He died on February 10, 1928. He took the name John Stone in the west.

Guðjón emigrated west in 1880 and Margrét emigrated with her parents in 1877. They lived in the Yellow Medicine County Settlement.
