Borghildur was the daughter of Guðbrandur Ingjaldsson and his wife Anna Gísladóttir in Arnarholt. She was the housekeeper for Einar Bjarnason, a merchant in Reykjavík, and his wife, Helga Sigurðardóttir. Borghildur emigrated with Helga west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1873 where Einar had come a year earlier. Jóhannes emigrated to Wisconsin in 1873 and lived near Milwaukee until 1878 when he moved west and settled in Minneota in Minnesota.
