Sigurjóna was the daughter of Grímur Laxdal of Akureyri and his first wife, Hlaðgerður Þórðardóttir. She was a half-sister to Hlaðgerðar and Daníel, who were the children of Grímur and Aldís, his second wife. Sigurjóna emigrated west with Reverend Jón Bjarnason and his wife Lára Gudjohnsen to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1873. She bought land in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota in 1886.
