Hólmfríður was the daughter of Thorvaldur Stephensen, a merchant, and his wife Ragneiðar Einarsdóttir who moved to Chicago in 1873. There, Hólmfríður married a well known lawyer, Sharpe by name. Holmfríður was attracted to the young man for his unique talent and artistic talent. The first play by an Icelandic woman was about her and appeared in print in Reykjavik in 1897.
