Baldvin Lárus Baldvinsson was born on October 26, 1856 in Eyjafjarðarsýsla. He took the last name Baldwinson in the west. He died in 1936 in Winnipeg.

Baldvin went west to Ontario in Canada in 1873 and settled in Toronto. He moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1881 and lived there all the time. In 1883 he was commissioned by Iceland under the auspices of the Canadian government to accompany a group of Icelanders west across the ocean to Canada. There he met Helga as she was in the group. Baldvin was editor of Heimskringla and was elected to the Manitoba State Assembly.
