Jón Þórðarson was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla in 1845. He died in N. Dakota on May 11, 1911. He took the last name Thordarson in the west.

Spouse: Rósa Jónsdóttir b. in Eyjafjarðarsýsla in 1844, d. 1937.

Children: 1. Ingibjörg (Emma) b. in Iceland on July 12, 1874, d. in Portland, Oregon on May 8, 1963 2. Jón b. in Milwaukee 1875 3. Franklin b. in a windowless cabin in 1878 in Pembina County, N. Dakota 4. Ólöf b. in the Garðar Settlement in 1884 5. Kristín b. in the Garðar Settlement. Two other children died in their first years and Kristín died young.

Jón and Rósa emigrated west in 1873 to Ontario, Canada. They travelled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and lived there four years. They moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1877 and lived there over a year before moving south to Pembina, N. Dakota where they bought land just outside of town. They lived there a number of years, but in 1882, they moved to the Garðar Settlement and settled between Garðar and Mountain.
