A new widow in the summer of 1873, she traveled with her children from the city to work with a Norwegian farmer in Dane County. She stayed there until the fall of 1874, when she moved to the young, Icelandic settlement of Shawano County. About 1880 she moved to Garðar, N. Dakota. Her daughters, Guðrún and Ingibjörg moved to Chicago at some point because their brother Hjörtur moved from N. Dakota to Chicago in 1885 and met up with his sister there.
