Páll emigrated west across the ocean in 1873 with the first large group of Icelanders. He went to Milwaukee and stayed there for a short time, but in 1874 he went on the famous exploration trip to Alaska with Jón Ólafsson and Olaf Ólafsson of Espihóli. When he came back, Páll was admitted to a medical school in Chicago and graduated from there. He moved to Minnesota and opened a clinic there.
