She came west with her brother Guðmundur to Kinmount, Ontario in 1874. A year later, they moved to Winnipeg and settled there. Their parents, Jón Árnason and Rebekka Guðmundsdóttir, emigrated in 1876. Friðrik was in their company from Iceland to Winnipeg and built a hut in Shanty Town nr. 6 Hudson´s Bay Flats.
