Magnús and Sigurrósa emigrated on the same ship from Akureyri to Canada. They lived in eastern Canada a few years before moving west to Winnipeg in 1877, where they were married. They tried living in New Iceland for two years but then moved back to Winnipeg. In 1880, they moved south to N. Dakota. They bought land there, 30 km (18.5 miles) southwest of Pembina village, not far from where the town of Glasston is today.
