Jón Jónsson was born at Hól in Skagafjarðarsýsla on April 10, 1848. He took the last name Hillman in the west.
Spouse: 1) 1879 in Markland, Nova Scotia Jóhanna Hafsteinsdóttir b. 1856 in Skagafjarðarsýsla, d. 1884 in Pembina, N. Dakota. 2) 1892 Elísabet Katrín Sveinsdóttir b. October 21, 1871 in N. Múlasýsla. She was the daughter of Sveinn Þorsteinsson and Sigurbörg Björnsdóttir.
Children: With Jóhanna: 1. Sigríður Anna. They also lost a baby. With Elísabet: 1. Jón 2. Magnús 3. Elísabet. Elísabet had a son, Jón, with her first husband.
Jón emigrated west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 with his father and brother. They moved east to Markland, Nova Scotia and lived there until 1882. By then, Jón has a family and they moved to Pembina, N. Dakota. In 1884, Jón moved the family to Mountain in the Thingvalla Settlement and lived there.
