Ólafur emigrated west alone to Ontario in 1876 and travelled east to Markland, Nova Scotia. Helga emigrated in 1878 with Ólafur, one year old. They lived in the community a number of years, the in Halifax, but moved west to Winnipeg in 1883 and remained there. Ólafur had a dairy farm west of the city where today is 510 Maryland St. He called himself Fellsted in Markland, but used the name Olsen when he got to Winnipeg.
