Hannes emigrated west alone to Ontario, Canada in 1874 and may have lived in Kinmount the first winter. He moved to Nova Scotia a year later and remained there until the spring of 1876. He may then have gone back to Iceland, but western sources say he died on the way. He may have had a wife in Iceland.
