Þorgerður emigrated west to Utah with her mother, Guðrún Jónsdóttir, and they settled in Spanish Fork. There Þorgerður concentrated on sewing and became known for her excellent craftsmanship. When her foster sister, Gróa Þorláksdóttir died, Þorgerður adopted her son, Júlíus, and raised him.
