Guðmundur took up the Mormon faith in Copenhagen in 1851. He emigrated west over the ocean in 1857 to Salt Lake City, Utah. Marie Garff and her husband, Niels Garff, emigrated as part of a group. He died on the way. Guðmundur lived first in Salt Lake City, then in Draper, and lastly in Lehi.
