Tóbías heard the Mormon missionary, Halldór Jónsson, talk in Reykjavík in 1889 and decided to investigate further in Utah. He travelled with his children, Sigríður and Njál, to England in 1900 and then west to New York. They arrived in Cleveland, Utah on July 20th of the same year. Tóbías first lived there with Jón Jóhannsson of Hrútafjordur, but Jón went on a mission to Iceland on August 18, 1900. Jón helped Tóbías put little Sigríður into foster care while he went north to Raymond, Alberta with Njál. Tóbías lived there for some years before returning to Iceland and was in Reykjavík in 1909. He went back west, now with his other sons and they settled in Alberta. Later Tóbías moved to Redding, in Northern California where two of his sons had settled.
