Þorbjörn Jónsson was born in Rangárvallasýsla on May 5, 1871. He died in Grace, Idaho on September 20, 1947. He was listed as Thurber or Thorber Johnson in the west.

Þorbjörn emigrated west with his parents, Jón Ingimundarson and Þórdís Þorbjörnsdóttir, to Utah in 1886. He lived with them in Spanish Fork the first year, but then moved with Guðfinna to Scofield where he worked as a carpenter in the mines. He was lucky when, on May 1, 1900, there was a big explosion in the area and many people died. He was to be on duty that morning but exchanged shifts with a friend who died! After that, they moved to Idaho, where he settled with his mother, then a widow, and brothers.
