Hafsteinn moved west to Manitoba in 1876 with his parents, Sigurður Jónatansson and Guðrún Sigurðardóttir, and his siblings. They settled in the Árnes Settlement in New Iceland. Hafsteinn lost his father soon after coming to the west and, at the age of 13, he went to work for farmers in the area. In 1886 he was the first Icelander to settle in Keewatin, Ontario, where he got a job with Lake of the Woods Milling Co. and worked there after that.
