Salóme emigrated west in 1892, first living in Winnipeg but moving in 1897 to Keewatin, Ontario with her first husband, Þorgrímur Thorgrímsen. There she ran a canteen for the employees of the railway company, C.P.R. Þorkell went west with his mother, the widow Vigdís Guðmundsdóttir, and his siblings in 1887. They went to New Iceland where Þorkell worked in fishing. In 1891 he moved to Keewatin, Ontario, where he fished.
