Halldór and Margrét came west in 1878 to Canada and went to Markland, Nova Scotia. With them was Sesselja Grímsdóttir, and the three were all living at Stóra Háls in Þingvallahreppur. Einar Einarsson from Hvoll in Dyrhólahreppur was with them. Halldór and Margrét moved to Winnipeg in 1882 and lived there for two years, but then settled in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota.
