Ásvaldur emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his mother, Guðrún Ásmundsdóttir, stepfather, Bjarni Olgeirsson, and half-siblings. They went to Gimli in New Iceland, but Ásvaldur went south to the Icelandic settlement near Minneota, Minnesota. He was there until 1881 but then moved to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota and took land there a year later. He worked in the woods in the winter of 1882-83 east of Winnipeg, Manitoba, but came back and settled in the Garðar Settlement in the spring of 1883. He moved west alone to Sheridan, Oregon in 1893 but returned to N. Dakota each fall for the next four years to carry out the harvest. In the spring of 1893, he moved from Sheridan north to the ocean. His family also moved and they settled in Warrenton, Oregon. Ásvaldur turned to fishing and operated a canning factory for years.
