Árni emigrated west to Ontario, Canada with his parents, Þorlákur Björnsson and Þórdís Árnadóttir, and his siblings in 1874. They moved to New Iceland and then south to N. Dakota in 1879. Árni bought land in the Pembina Settlement in 1879 and his parents did likewise. Later, he moved to Mountain where his parents died. Árni was well educated and moved east to New York where he became a banker.
