Jóhann Geir came west as a widower to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 with his two sons and elderly father, Jóhannes Grímsson. On the same ship was Anna Jónsdóttir and they became acquainted at sea on the way to New Iceland. They were married and lived in a cottage south of Hnausa. They moved south to N. Dakota in 1888 and lived south of Mountain in the Eyford Settlement.

The family took the last name Geir in N. Dakota. Jóhann’s mother was named Geirlaug Davíðsdóttir.
