Ólafur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents and siblings in 1876. They arrived in Winnipeg in 1880 and three years later, the family moved to N. Dakota and lived in the Víkur Settlement. Ólafur and Rósa moved to Alberta at the turn of the century and lived for the next ten years in Red Deer and Markerville. They moved in 1910 to Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement) in Saskatchewan and settled in Wynyard. Rósa came west with her mother, Sigríður Árnadóttir, in 1882. They moved south to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota where Sigríður’s sister-in-law, Rósa Kristjánsdóttir, lived with her husband, Jón Þórðarson. There, Sigríður married Ásgeir Guðnason who had come west in 1883.
