Hlaðgerður came west in 1876 with her mother, Aldís Jónasdóttir, and settled with her in Gimli, Manitoba. They moved south to N. Dakota in 1880. Þorsteinn came west to Wisconsin in 1873 with his parents and siblings. They lived in Shawano until 1879 and moved with them to N. Dakota. He began farming with Hlaðgerður but moved to Milton in 1891 and then to Winnipeg in 1901. They lived for seven years in Selkirk but longer in Winnipeg.
