Helga came west to Canada with her parents in 1873 and lived with them in Muskoka, the first Icelandic colony in Canada. The settlement was in Cardwell, north of the village of Rosseau. There she married Jakob, who also moved west in 1873. They moved west to N. Dakota in 1881 and settled in the Garðar Settlement. Helga and Jakob divorced, she moved west to the Pacific Ocean and lived there.
