Jóhanna emigrated with her mother, Ingibjörg Jónatansdóttir, to Minneota, Minnesota in 1881. They later took the train north to N. Dakota in 1884. Jóhannes came west to New Iceland with his mother and siblings in 1876. They lived at Melstað, a settlement south of Gimli. Jóhannes and his brothers took the last name Melsted.  They moved to N. Dakota in 1881 and homesteaded in the Garðar Settlement. Jóhannes himself homesteaded in the community and he and Jóhanna lived there until 1910 when he moved to the Vatnabyggð (Lakes Settlement) in Saskatchewan. She moved there in 1912 with their two youngest children, Valgerður and Elmar. They lived southeast of Wynyard but Jóhanna later moved from there. She moved west to the Pacific Ocean, stayed for some time in British Columbia but ended up in California.
