Kristján Benediktsson was born at Tjörnes in S. Þingeyjarsýsla on August 14, 1867. He died in Manitoba on January 24, 1934.

He came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his mother, Helga Gísladóttir, in 1879. He father, Benedikt Andrésson, had drowned in 1870. Kristján and Helga stayed in the city for the first winter, then moved in the spring of 1880 to New Iceland where Helga married Jón Björnsson the same year. Kristjan worked various jobs in Winnipeg. Retail jobs suited him and he ran his own store in Baldur until 1930. His mother lived her last years with him in Winnipeg.
