Oddur came west to Minnesota in 1880 with his father, Vigfús Andrésson, future stepmother, Sigríður Jóhannsdóttir, and siblings. He went to school, was well educated, and became a salesman at the O. G. Anderson Cash Store. He worked in real estate and bought land in McLean County, N. Dakota, which he divided into lots and offered for sale to his fellow countrymen in Minnesota through the “Anderson Land Company”.
