Jón Magnússon was born in 1854 in N. Múlasýsla. He died in Minnesota on May 15, 1939. He took the last name Strand in the west.

Jón emigrated west to Minnesota in 1879 with his parents, Magnús Þorsteinsson and Guðrún Jónsdóttir. Margrét’s parents, Guðmundur Eyjólfsson and Kristín María Guðmundsdóttir, came west and settled there in 1880. Jón was a farmer in Lincoln County for the first years, but then moved to Minneota.
