Björn came west to Manitoba in 1893 with his parents, Sigbjörn Ásbjörnsson and Stefanía Magnúsdóttir. They settled in Selkirk. Þórunn was the daughter of Jón Júlíus Jónsson and Sigrún Jónína Jónsdóttir. She grew up in Winnipeg and attended the Success Business College after which she worked in stores and later book keeping at Columbia Press. She lived in Selkirk 1913-26 but moved to Winnipeg in 1926.
