Stefán was the son of Sigurður Bjarnason and Sesselja Andrésdóttir. They came west in about 1880 to Manitoba. From there, they moved to N. Dakota where Sigurður died. Sesselja moved with the children to Minnesota and that is where Stefán grew up. He worked for Icelandic farmers in Lincoln and Lyon Counties, but later worked as a house painter.
